About the SSSFA
The Sutherland Shire Sports Flying Association has served those interested in radio-controlled aircraft in the Sutherland Shire and Northern Illawarra Region, in one form or another for over thirty years. The Club is affiliated with Miniature Aero Sports of NSW (MAS) and the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia Inc. (MAAA) and operates under air navigation rules as required by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
The SSSFA currently has a membership of around 140, making it one of the larger model aircraft clubs in NSW. Membership numbers are capped so as to ensure a good and safe flying experience for all.
To enquire about membership fill out the expression of interest form and post it to the PO Box 397 Engadine 2233 NSW.
The SSSFA caters for a complete cross section of the community with an interest in model aviation. Members come from all walks of life, professionals, shift workers, pensioners, retirees and students. Such is the interest in radio-controlled aircraft that we count many pilots and air traffic controllers, from both the airlines and general aviation among our members. Several of our younger members have, over the years, progressed from flying models to full size aircraft as a career.
The SSSFA has a training policy in place, with MAAA qualified instructors to assist student pilots through all aspects of radio controlled flying up to their solo stage and beyond. In addition to this flight training, help and advice is always available from experienced members to assist new starters in both the selection of equipment and aircraft construction.
Younger members can gain valuable experience and acquire skills and knowledge that may greatly enhance their career prospects, particularly in the aircraft industry.
The Club has access to facilities that enable us to operate seven days a week. Our main field at Waterfall (Garawarra) is available seven days a week from 8am till sunset. This field, known as Garawarra Field, has been developed by club members over many years, the entrance to this site can be found off the old Princes Highway at Waterfall, 300 metres south of the Woronora dam enterance road.
SSSFA has limited access to Heathcote oval.
The gates of Garawarra field are kept locked; keys are made available to financial members only.
It is strongly recommended that any new members talk to existing members & refer to the SSSFA training policy before any radio equipment, engine or kit is purchased; a little advice taken before starting could save considerable frustration and expense.
Further information on club activities can be obtained by contacting a committee member.
