About the SSSFA
The Sutherland Shire Sports Flying Association has served those interested in radio-controlled aircraft in the Sutherland Shire and Northern Illawarra Region, in one form or another for over thirty years. The Club is affiliated with Miniature Aero Sports of NSW (MAS) and the Model Aeronautical Association of Australia Inc. (MAAA) and operates under air navigation rules as required by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
The association currently has a membership of over 140, making it one of the largest model aircraft clubs in Australia. Membership numbers are capped at 175 so as to ensure a good and safe flying experience for all. Contact the Secretary (see below) or go to the website for membership application and materials.
Our organisation caters for a complete cross section of the community with an interest in aviation. Members come from all walks of life, from professionals, shift workers, pensioners, retirees and students. Such is the interest in radio-controlled aircraft that we count many pilots and air traffic controllers, from both the airlines and general aviation among our members. Several of our younger members have, over the years, progressed from flying models to full size aircraft as a career.
The Club has a training policy in place, with qualified instructors to assist student pilots through all aspects of radio controlled flying up to their solo stage and beyond. In addition to this flying training, help and advice is always available from experienced members to assist new starters in both the selection of equipment and aircraft construction.
Younger members can gain valuable experience and these acquired skills and knowledge greatly enhance their career prospects, particularly in the aircraft industry.
The Club has access to facilities that enable us to operate seven days a week. Flying takes place on a restricted basis 8.00am - 4.00 pm Monday to Friday at Heathcote Oval, but our own field at Waterfall (Garawarra) is available seven days a week from 8am till sunset. This field, known as “Garawarra Field” has been developed by club members over recent years, the entrance to this site can be found off the Princes Highway at Waterfall, 300 metres south of
the road leading to the Woronora dam. The gates protecting this field are kept locked; keys are made available to financial members only.
It is strongly recommended that any new members talk to existing members & refer to the Club’s training policy before any radio equipment, engine or kit is purchased; a little advice taken before starting could save considerable frustration and expense.
Further information on club activities can be obtained by contacting any of the committee members or by attending one of the club meetings. These meetings are held bi-monthly and details of meetings can be obtained by contacting a committee member.
